Hanlontown was named in honor of Frank J. Hanlon who was the secretary of the
Iowa-Minnesota Townsite Company, which was responsible for laying out 14 towns
in the Hanlontown area. The town was surveyed in 1898 and the first building in
Hanlontown was the Martin Lewis Blacksmith Shop in the summer of 1899. Mr. Lewis
also owned the first car in town, a steam-driven car bought in St. Louis.
Major events in town included a bank robbery in 1900. The burglars cracked
the safe with nitro-glycerin and took $2000. The burglars were never caught
though a reward was put up of $300. In 1900, the first Hanlontown baby was born -
he was named Hanlon.
