Kensett was named after a Baltimore oyster packer named Thomas Kensett, who
promised to build a church in town if it was named after him. He never fulfilled
his promise.
The first settler in Kensett was in 1856. His name was J. Wright and he had a
hut which was built partly above and partly below ground. The Great Kensett Fire
on May 2, 1901 destroyed 24 buildings - though the central marketplace of the county
prior to the fir - Kensett never recovered from it. The adding machine was invented
by Clarence E. Locke, a Kensett resident until his death in 1945.
